RO or UV water purifier: Which one is better for your home?
We all know how important it is to drink clean water to avoid any health-related issues. With extensive water pollution, tap water is not a reliable source of drinking anymore. So, every household has to rely upon water purifiers for good quality drinking water. However, water purifiers too come with different water purification systems. So, choosing the right water filter for your home is tricky. The most commonly used water purifiers are RO (Reverse Osmosis) and UV water purifiers. Here is a comparison between these both – RO water purifier and UV water purifier to make your decision making easier.
Reverse Osmosis (RO) Water Purifier
In RO water purifier, the water passes through a pump to build up pressure which is then passed through a semi-permeable membrane. During this process, the dissolved solids, TDS, and other microorganisms are removed and only water molecules can move to the other side of the membrane. So, the purified water is free from dissolved impurities and harmful bacteria. An RO purifier also coverts hard water to soft water and improves its taste.
UV Water Purifier
As the name suggests, UV water purifiers use UV (Ultra Violet) rays to purify the water. Here, impure water is passed through a UV radiation source and exposes water to the UV rays to kill the harmful bacteria from the water. However, UV water purifiers are not capable of removing chemical impurities from the water. Some UV water purifiers come equipped with UF technology for further removal of the suspended solids, dispersed materials, etc.
The Key differences between RO and UV water purifiers

1. RO water purifiers remove dissolved salts while UV water purifiers cannot. Also, UV filters can fill all the pathogens in the water but cannot remove the suspended dead bacteria. On the other hand, RO water purifiers can not only kill the bacteria but also filters the dead bacteria out.
2. RO water purifier turns hard water into soft water and improves water taste. UV water purifiers do nothing to the taste of water.
3. RO water purifiers produce much wastewater during the purification process while there is no water wastage during the UV process.
4. RO system can even work on dirty water but UV purifiers need to have clear water to purify it effectively. So, UV water purifiers are not suitable for areas where the water is comparatively dirty and with sediments.
5. RO water purifiers need electricity to purify the water effectively and boost water pressure. UV filters can work even without electricity.
6. RO systems comparatively require low maintenance but they do require regular service checkups. In UV water purifier, UV lamps require annual replacement or they won’t perform efficiently.
